Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Hy. Lawes, 11th Hsrs), regimentally engraved naming, good very fine

Henry Lawes was born at Bray, near Maidenhead, Berkshire, and enlisted into the 11th Hussars at Hounslow on 22 November 1849, aged 19, a blacksmith by trade. He was at Scutari General Depot from 7 August 1854 and sent to Varna on 29 August. The Balaclava period muster roll states ‘in Hospital’. He was invalided to Chatham from the Crimea on 19 April 1856, and discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on 22 July 1856, being:

‘Unfit for further service. Is unable to walk without a crutched stick and suffers a great deal from pain in the left hip. There is also a wasting on that side and a very limited action of the joint. The result of a severe injury - a horse falling on him whilst he was shoeing it - he states that, “having hold of the horse's foot it sprang to one side and he was dragged with it, and then the horse fell on him.” This is by his own statement. The accident happened on the 7th of March 1856.’

He had served a total of 6 years 155 days, including 2 years in Turkey and the Crimea. The medal rolls confirm all three clasps.
