Pair: Private T. Thorburn, 11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own), a possible charger at Balaklava

Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (T. Thorburn. 11th
Hussars) officially impressed naming; Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue (Thos Thorburn XI PAO Hussars) regimentally impressed naming, heavy contact wear on right of Queen’s head, otherwise nearly very fine (2)

Thomas Thorburn enlisted into the 11th Hussars at Hulme Barracks, Manchester, on 3 November 1847, aged 18. The regimental muster rolls show that he was on duty with the service troops in the Crimea for the entire period from January 1854-March 1856, and that during this time he was on ‘Letter Duty’ in December 1854 and January 1855, and at Scutari in April 1855.

The medal rolls confirm entitlement to all four clasps and, therefore, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, it is possible that he may have taken part in the Charge at Balaklava. He was discharged at Birmingham, ‘by claim, time expired’, on 28 December 1859 and was not in receipt of any Good Conduct Badges due to having spent time in Military Prison from April-May 1859.
