Edward Goodman was born at Rainham, near Packenham, Norfolk, and enlisted into the 11th Hussars at King's Lynn on 14 December 1854, aged 19, a weaver by trade. He joined the regiment in the Crimea on 25 May 1855. He was tried by a Regimental Court-martial for ‘being asleep on his post’, and imprisoned from 13 December-12 February 1856.

He re-engaged for 12 years further service on 11 October 1863, and was sent to the Depot at Canterbury when the Regiment went to India on 25 June 1866, he himself joining the regiment in India on 12 October 1869. He left Umballa in November 1877, embarking aboard H.M.S. Malabar at Bombay for England on 6 December 1877. He was discharged from Colchester, ‘having completed his second term of twelve years’ service’, on 16 April 1878, being then ‘in poor medical health. Has lately been suffering from dyspepsia and ulcers, due considerably to the climate in India.’

He served a total of 23 years 56 days, including 1 year in Turkey and the Crimea, and 7 years 1 month in India. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal on 1 April 1875, with a gratuity of £5.
