South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1877-8-9 (Tpr. D. Samson. Beaufort R. C. Vol:), good very fine

David Samson (also noted as 'Sampson' on the published Medal Roll) is confirmed with entitlement to this clasp for service with the Beaufort Rangers Cavalry Volunteers; interestingly he is one of only two members of the unit to qualify for the clasp '1877-8-9', with the remaining 60 officers and men being awarded the clasp '1877-8'. This is almost certainly due to him (along with one Percy William Mallitt) being further noted on the Medal Roll as present for the battles for 'Morosi's Stronghold', which took place between 8 April and 20 November 1879 and resulted in no less than three awards of the Victoria Cross.
