Egbert Henry Venables was born on 9 July 1884 at Whaley Bridge, Cheshire, and was a Gardener prior to joing the Royal Navy on 9 July 1902. He served on Glory at the outbreak of the Great War serving on her until 10 April 1916 when he transfers to Vernon and then to Victory before joining Arlanza on 21 November 1916. He receives his L.S. & G.C. medal on 19 February 1917 and completes his time on Arlanza on 12 October 1918 before returning to Victory then Vernon and finally Queen Elizabeth on 17 December 1919 where he remains until he retires on 5 January 1922.
Arlanza was commissioned as an armed merchant cruiser and carried a special British diplomatic mission to South America in 1918.
