James Edward Yates was born at Stafford, Staffordshire on 17 May 1887, the son of John and Elizabeth Yates of 107 Sandon Road, Stafford. Working as a finisher in a Boot and Shoe Factory he joined the Royal Artillery and entered the Great War in France at some stage after 1916. He was killed in the field on 11 December 1917, the Registry of Effects lists his unit as 158th (Accrington and Burnley) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Yates was buried at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery; sold together with a memorial service card and photograph of the recipient in uniform, trimmed to fit the reverse of his memorial plaque.
