Arthur Gordon Valpy French was born in London in 1883 and was the son of the Reverend C. J. V. French M.A.. He was educated at Sherborne and later St. Thomas's Hospital, qualifying M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. in 1909. He served at Haslar Royal Naval Hospital between 1911-14, and for his Great War Service served on Carnarvon from 14 February 1914 and then to Pembroke on 22 August 1916. He was then Acting Staff Surgeon on Marshal Ney from 28 March 1917, this was a Monitor and engaged German destroyers during a raid on Ramsgate on 27 April 1917 causing the German force to withdraw. Later became Staff Surgeon on Vindex from 7 March 1918, Vindex was a Seaplane Carrier converted from the fast passenger ship SS Viking serving in the Mediterranean in 1918 based in Malta. He served as Fleet Medical Officer of the Home Fleet and was then in charge of the R.N. Hospital, Valetta, Malta. Served as Surgeon Specialist at the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham1928-31 and in 1932 served as Fleet Medical Officer of the Home Fleet in Nelson.

Upon leaving the Royal Navy he became medical officer to Elders and Fyffe's Shipping Company and served on the staff of the Admiral Superintendent of contract-built ships. He died at Exmouth on 21 November 1946.
