Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (1668 Pte James Barnes. 27th Octr 1858), engraved naming, light contact marks, very fine
James Barnes was born at Highworth, Wiltshire and was a Painter prior to enlistment. He attested into the 90th Light Infantry at Rochester, Kent on 18 July 1839. He transferred to the Cape Mounted Riflemen on 1 February 1848 serving with them for the remainder of his service. He served in Ceylon for 1 year and 8 months and in South Africa for 13 years and 8 months. He was discharged at Chatham on 17 July 1860 still with the rank of Private.
Sold with photocopied service papers which include details of him receiving the South Africa 1834-53 Medal.
