Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 1st type (No. 1209. Color Sergeant William Macfie [SIC] 48 Regt. 1854), contact wear overall, very fine

William MacFie was born at Dumbarton, Scotland and attested at Salford, Lancashire for the 48th Regiment of Foot. He saw service in the Ionian Islands for two years and one month, later being posted to the Crimea for a year (Medal and clasp) before spending a year with the Garrison of Malta. During this time he was promoted Sergeant on 1 August 1842 and later Colour-Sergeant on 9 August 1847, thus serving in that rank before the Crimean War. During the war he was further appointed Quartermaster-Sergeant on 3 August 1855, with the end of the conflict MacFie was invalided from service on 21 June 1857; sold together with a typed biography and copied Medal Roll relating to the Army L.S. & G.C.
