James Jackson was born in Clerkenwell, London and was a Brass Turner prior to enlistment. He attested for the 8th Regiment on 9 of April 1846 at Portsmouth, Hampshire and saw nine years and nine months service in the East Indies. He transferred to the School of Musketry at Hythe on the 8 of June 1858 and was finally discharged on the 13 of August 1867 with the rank of First Class Sergeant Instructor.
