Samuel Davies was born at Liverpool and was a Joiner prior to enlistment, he attested into the 2nd Queens Regiment under age on the 5th December 1853. He was discharged on the 8 September 1856 and re-attested the following day into the Corps of Permanent Instructors of Musketry. He only saw service at home and was promoted to Sergeant-Major on 18 November 1874 before being discharged on the 30 of November 1875. His intended place of residence was Lewisham, Kent.
