William Massie was born at Aberdeen, Scotland on 25 March 1883 and was a rancher living at Vernon, British Columbia by the outbreak of the Great War. He sailed for France with his unit on 18 June 1916 and suffered a gunshot wound to the head on 10 April 1917 during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
