Murdoch Lewis Edward Gordon was born in Montreal on 14 May 1895 and was a compositor by trade upon his joining the Royal Highlanders of Canada on 31 March 1915.

He served in France from October 1915 and was thrice wounded during the course of the Great War. Gordon was first wounded by a gunshot to the right knee on 22 August 1916 at Ypres, being admitted to the No. 13 General Hospital. He suffered with a contusion to the back whilst at Vimy from 14 April 1917 and then suffered a shrapnel wound to his left hand, which broke the fifth metacarpal at Ypres (Battle of Passchendaele) on 29 October 1917, being admitted to No. 11 Canadian Field Ambulance, at that time also suffering shell shock. Having been duly awarded his M.M., Gordon was discharged in May 1919.
