Thomas William Emerson was born at Heathery Cleugh, Durham, in April 1892, the son of Margaret and Joseph Emerson, of Wearhead, Durham. Enlisting at Crook he was posted to the 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and entered the war with them at some stage after 1916.
The German Spring Offensive caught the Allies by surprise and they were forced back towards Ameins however by April the German advance had slowed and the British were starting to dig in again. The 10th Battalion had entered the trenches on the 'Imperial Line' in the Arras sector. It was here that a German shell scored a direct hit on one of their outposts killing 5 soldiers on 4 April 1918. Emerson was one of those killed, he is commemorated upon the Arras Memorial. Tragically his father had already passed away leaving his mother as the sole beneficiary of his pension; sold together with copied research including a War Diary entry, census data and medal rolls as well as a Commonwealth War Graves certificate and Soldiers Died in the Great War entry.
