(x) A 'Gallipoli - August Offensive' casualty's trio to Private W. G. Carr, 16th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, who died of wounds received at Gallipoli on 13 August 1915

1914-15 Star (2106 Pte W. G. Carr. 16/ Bn A.I.F.); British War and Victory Medals (2106 Pte. W. G. Carr. 16-Bn. A.I.F.), sold together with named boxes of issue, good very fine (3)

William George Carr was born at Semaphore, South Australia and worked as a painter prior to enlisting on 2 March 1915 with the 16th Battalion. Embarking upon the transport Borda on 23 June 1915 for service in the Gallipoli campaign as part of the 6th reinforcements for the unit.

Carr served with them here for some two months before the August Offensive which began in the second week of that month in 1915. The 16th Battalion was part of the 4th Brigade, took part in a major attack on Hill 971, this feature was steep and provided little cover. As a result the losses were high, during the fighting Carr suffered a gunshot wound to the right ankle which saw him taken to the 4th Field Ambulance.

The injury was serious enough for him to be invalided to the 21st General Hospital in Alexandra. Unfortunately Carr's weakened constitution fell victim to the unsanitary conditions at Gallipoli and upon arriving at the Hospital he was found to also be suffering from Tetanus. He succumbed to his wound on 13 August 1915 and was buried at Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
