Ashley Robert Vines was born at Kew, Melbourne, the son of Alice Vines of 1 Fenwick Street, Kew. Working as a soft goods salesman on the outbreak of the Great War Vines enlisted with the 5th Battalion on 17 August 1914. Promoted Corporal on 22 February 1915 he joined his Battalion in the Anzac Cove Landings on 25 April 1915.
The 5th Battalion was ordered to advance to the north of the Cove and push towards Hill 971 however they were held up by fierce resistance. During the fighting Vines suffered a severe gunshot wound to his left arm and recieved with what his records describe as 'mental deficiency from shock'. Transported first to the 1st Australian General Hospital, Heliopolis, Egypt he was also noted to be suffering from an inflammation of the eye. The result was that his eye was 'excised' according to his medical records, invalided back to Australia it soon became clear that while his wounds would heal Vines was no longer fit for service. He was invalided from service on 7 January 1916.
