Lachlan McKinnon was born at Coraki, New South Wales in 1882 and enlisted with the 5th (New England) Light Horse Regiment on 22 October 1914. Entering the war at Gallipoli with this unit on 16 May 1915 he was appointed Corporal on 18 November. They arrived without their horses and performed the role of infantrymen for the duration of the campaign, notably 5th Regiment had their commander killed in the fighting.

They were evacuated from Gallipoli on 25 December 1915 and taken to Alexandria where the Regiment joined the E.E.F. Here the ANZAC mounted Division, including the 5th Regiment was in action at the Battle of Romani. McKinnon was to serve with the Regiment until 4 January 1918 when he briefly joined the 2nd Australian Light Horse, returning to the 5th Regiment on 27 March. Returning to Australia in November 1918 he was discharged on 26 February 1919; sold together with a gold badge engraved 'Pres to Corpl. L. McKinnon from the Curaki Girls Patriotic League 21.3.19.', hallmarked for 9 carat gold along with copied research including service papers and a photograph.
