Henry Morgan was born in 1880, a native of Walsall Wood Birmingham. Enlisting at Colchester on 15 December 1893 he was posted first to the Liverpool Regiment with the rank of Boy as at the time he was no older than fourteen. His service records provide a clue as to the sudden enlistment stating 'transferred to the Lincoln Regt. to serve with elder brother'. This the younger Morgan did, being posted to Malta with the Battalion on 1 February 1895.
Morgan was still too young for service in the Battle of Atbara however he attainted the age of eighteen just a few days later on 13 April 1898. As such he was of age in time for the Battle of Omdurman, with the Battalion being heavily engaged during the fighting. With the end of the Mahdist Regime the Battalion was posted to India were Morgan was appointed Bandsman on 15 October 1900. Continued promotions saw him reaching the rank of Lance Corporal (Bandsman) on 31 March 1903.
Finally leaving India on 20 February 1911, they arrived at Aden where they remained for nearly two more years. Morgan returned to Britain on 1 November 1912 having been away from the country for 16 years. On the outbreak of the Great War, he was stationed with the 1st Battalion, entering the war with them on 13 August 1914. They saw extremely heavy fighting throughout the first year of the war with Morgan being promoted Corporal on 1 October and Sergeant on 4 November 1914.
He returned to Britain a few days later on 15 November and was soon posted to the 3rd Battalion on 17 February 1915. Posted to the Depot on 10 November 1917 he was appointed Band Sergeant on 12 March 1918. Morgan was to serve in this rank until he was discharged on 24 January 1919.
