William Longton was born at Longton, Staffordshire in 1875 and enlisted with the North Staffordshire Regiment on 25 May 1894. Seeing home service for the rest of the year he was posted to join the 1st Battalion in Egypt on 24 September 1895. From here he joined the unit on the Dongala Expedition, seeing action at the Battle of Hafir just prior to the action at Atbara.
Remaining in Egypt until 11 October 1897 Hood was posted to India where he was to remain until the Anglo-Boer War. Transferred to the 2nd Battalion he served with them in South Africa from 19 October 1902, the next month he joined the Army Reserve being discharged on 24 May 1906.
This was not to be the end of Hood's military career however as he returned to the colours on 18 August 1914 with the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment. Hood entered the war in France on 4 May 1915 and arrived with the 1st Battalion on 9 May. He served here until being posted to Salonica on 14 December 1915, where he was to serve for the rest of the war.
Coming under air attack on 27 February 1917 Hood suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh. This saw him admitted to the 1st Canadian Hospital and later to hospital in Malta, when he was admitted here it became clear he was also suffering from Malaria. Remaining at Malta for the better part of 1917 Hood was finally transferred to Britain where he was invalided from service in early 1918; sold together with copied service papers and medal rolls.
