Samuel James Pool was born at Stepney and had been a member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, West Kent Regiment prior to enlisting into the Royal Army Medical Corps on 8 November 1893. Posted to Egypt he served there between 13 July 1898-20 October 1898, before returning to the U.K. There he remained until a posting to South Africa between 7 January 1900-23 September 1902, on his return he spent the remainder of his service in the U.K., being originally discharged on 7 November 1909.
Re-enlisting on 2 June 1915 and was sent straight to France on 17 June 1915, where he remained until 28 March 1918, being placed on Reserve on 25 June 1919.
