(x) British War Medal 1914-20 (931655 Pte. W. Hogue. Can. Inf. Wks. Coy.), good very fine
William Hogue was an African-American born on 18 December 1879 at Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was working as a railway labourer in Calgary, Alberta when he joined No. 2 Construction Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, on 23 November 1916. Arriving in England from Canada on 17 April 1917, Hogue was admitted to hospital suffering from bronchitis between 6-18 May 1917. He was taken on the strength of the Nova Scotia Reserve Depot and served with the Canadian Forestry Corps in England from 5 November 1917-27 April 1918, and then was posted over to France to the 1st Canadian Infantry Works Battalion, where he served until War's end. Hogue held the rank of Corporal on his release at Calgary on 23 June 1919. No. 2 Construction Battalion is the subject of a great deal of public interest at present in Canada, as the treatment of its members was the subject of an official apology extended by the Canadian Government in the summer of 2022.
