(x) The Army L.S. & G.C. awarded to Private C. Broomwick, 2/24th Regiment of Foot, who erroneously appears upon Lieutenant J. R. M. Chard's roll for the Defence of Rorke's Drift
Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (58th Bde 2739. Pte. C. Broomwick, 91st Foot), polished, minor edge bruise, very fine
Charles Broomwick was born at Warwick in 1841 and served with the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Militia whilst working as a Labourer. Enlisting with the 2nd Battalion 24th Foot on 21 March 1859, he signed his attestation papers with an 'X'. Posted first to Mauritius, Broomwick joined the rest of the Regiment for service at Rangoon, embarking on 6 October 1865. After extensive service 'out East', the 2nd Battalion was posted to join the 1st Battalion for service in South Africa with Broomwick arriving on 10 March 1878. Here they famously took part in the Zulu War, with the 2nd Battalion losing 'G' Company at the disastrous Battle of Isandlwana.
Broomwick appears on Chard's roll for the Defence of Rorke's Drift - however this is likely an error. He is listed as posted to the Depot at Pietermaritzburg on 31 October 1878 with his pay - from this point - no longer coming via the 24th Regiment. There is no suggestion that he had returned to the Company and he is not mentioned in Frank Bourne's roll. Broomwick was certainly posted to the 58th Brigade, 91st Foot on 1 December 1879 with his South Africa Medal and clasp (Medal and clasp) appearing on their roll. He was discharged the next year, just after his award of the Army L.S. & G.C. in June 1880; sold together with copied research including discharge papers, pay lists and medal rolls as well as a copy of Chard's Rorke's Drift Roll and a C.D. containing census data, medal rolls and service papers.
