William Grimes was born at Plymouth on 24 January 1893 and was a marine fireman by Trade. Enlisting on 27 March 1911, he served aboard Albion from 15 July 1914-18 May 1916, followed by a small stint on Vivid II from 19 May 1916-30 July 1916 and he then returned to Albion until 4 November 1918. He was awarded his long service medal in 1926 with his record of service noting "Cannot count former service on re-entry on 2/5/38 for prog. pay & badges, owing to absence of over 5 years". Grimes was eventually released in Class A on 19 August 1945.
