Michael Robert Gardner was born on 27 January 1912 and was educated at Lancing College, where he was House Captain and he represented the Cricket XI and the Gold and Tennis Teams. Gardner then went up to Pembroke College, Cambridge and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Army Service Corps on 1 September 1934. A golfer of some repute he was Army Champion in 1936-37. Advanced Captain on 2 September 1940, he was acting Major on several occasions and was 'mentioned' (London Gazette 13 January 1944, refers) before War's end. Completing the Long Petroleum (Engineering) Course, he was made Major on 1 July 1946 and retired Lieutenant-Colonel in 27 January 1959. Gardner went on golfing and died at Yeovil on 27 September 1972.
