An outstanding campaign group of six awarded to Leading Stoker W. J. S. Dangerfield, Royal Navy, who earned a 'mention' for his gallantry after a shell explosion on Boadicea on the approach to assist in the Raid on Oran Harbour, 8 November 1942

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star, clasp, France and Germany; Africa Star, clasp, North Africa 1942-43; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R. (K.65331 W. J. S. Dangerfield. Sto.1. H.M.S. Shoreham.), lacquered, very fine (6)

M.I.D. London Gazette 23 March 1943. The Recommendation, submitted on 20 November 1942, which was eventually approved by The King on 17 March 1943, states:

'On the 8th November 1942 after a shell had exploded in the fore shell room he immediately went down into the shell room despite fire and smoke to render assistance and who succeeded later in plugging splinter holes below water line so that the forward compartment could be pumped out.'

William John Sydney Dangerfield would have found himself in the Persian Gulf for the award of his L.S. & G.C. Medal aboard Shoreham on New Year's Day 1940. He afterwards joined the books of Boadicea and assuming he joined her books by early 1942, he would have shared in her escort of Convoys PQ 15 and Convoy QP 12 to and from Murmansk in April and May 1942. He gave a fine account of himself when the ship was tasked to escort British ships to Oran during the North African invasion and was struck by a 5.1in shell which struck in the forward shell room from a French L'Adroit-class destroyer. It was Dangerfield and his comrades that sprang to action to ensure it was not a costly strike; sold together with copied research.
