James William Taplin was born at Stratford-upon-Avon and enlisted there, initially serving in the Royal Defence Corps (No. 13600). He thence served in France and was admitted to hospital via the No. 12 Ambulance Train in June 1917 suffering with gastroenteritis. Recovered, he was killed in action whilst serving with the 2/6th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 1 April 1918 and is commemorated upon the Pozieres Memorial.
