Fred Porter was born at Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1881, the son of Hannah Porter, 20 Dudley Road, Grantham. Living at 5 Bridge Street, New Somerby, Grantham on the outbreak of the Great War Porter entered the war in France on 8 June 1915 with the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire.
This unit took part in the early stages of the Battle of the Somme starting with an advance on the First Day north of Fricourt, following this up by taking part in the capture of Shelter Wood and Birch Tree Wood. Porter was still with them when they moved onto take part in the Battle of Mametz Wood. This was largely complete by 14 July and detachments of the Battalion were pressed into service for the fighting at the Battle of Bazentin starting that day.
Porter was one of those detached to serve with bombing parties with 110th Brigade the next day, they were noted in the regimental history as ‘largely instrumental in clearing the way for the advance upon High Wood’. They came under heavy fire in exchange including gas shells, between this and a lack of sleep many men became ill. Porter was killed during the advance one of four killed between 14-17 July, he is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial; sold together with copied research comprising a Commonwealth War Graves certificate, M.I.C. and an extract from The History of the Lincolnshire Regiment.
