Pair: Private G. W. Ellis, 1st/4th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, who was killed in action on 7 July 1916

George William Ellis enlisted with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 10 May 1915 and was posted to the 3/4th Battalion. Transferred to the 3/4th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment Ellis was posted to the 1st/4th Battalion in France on 25 February 1916. This Battalion went into action in the first week of the Somme Offensive at Thiepval Wood. Here they faced heavy fighting as both British and German commanders fed troops into the savage close quarter fighting. Ellis was killed here on 7 July 1916 when the Battalion and men of the 4th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry were caught in a heavy German counter attack. He is buried at the Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval; sold together with a copied M.I.C. and Commonwealth War Graves Certificate.
