Pair: Private John McKay, 7th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, late 1/3rd (Lowland) Field Company, Royal Engineers

British War and Victory Medals (35430 Pte. J. Mc Kay. York & Lanc. R.), very fine

John McKay was born in 1889 and living on North John Street, Glasgow when the war broke out. Attesting for the 1st.3rd (Lowland) Company, Royal Engineers on 22 October 1915 he served in Britain for the first few years of the war. As the need for men on the front became more acute McKay transferred to the York and Lancaster Regiment on 13 September 1917. Posted to France the next day he joined the 7th (Pioneer) Battalion on 19 September.

The Battalion was part of the heavy fighting at the Battle of Passchendaele however McKay was not to remain with them for long. Re-transferring after just four months of service he joined the 76th Field Company, Royal Engineers on 30 January 1918. Appointed Lance Corporal with this unit before the end of the war on 5 July 1917. He was demobilised on 7 April 1919; sold together with a copied attestation page.
