Frank Laity was born at Porthleven, Cornwall on 30 December 1890 and enlisted into the Royal Naval Reserve on 31 January 1910. During the Great War, he served he served aboard Argonaut, King Alfred Vivid and Teutonic he was finally demobilised on 7 January 1919.
