Walter Albert Victor Poat was born at Arundel on 22 June 1897 and enlisted as a Boy 2nd Class on 26 May 1913. Stationed with Agincourt at the outbreak of war he remained with her for the duration, completing his service on 20 November 1928 but re-engaging as an Able Seaman (Pens) on 16 July 1937, for this he received a War Gratuity.
