Rupert Oliver Ashton was born at Collingwood, Victoria on 26 August 1893 and was living at 145 Westgarth Street, Fitzroy upon his joining the Royal Australian Navy on 15 March 1913. During the Great War he served aboard Parramatta from 16 April 1914-6 February 1918. Parramatta operated with the Australian Fleet in the search for the German East Asia Squadron, then was involved in the capture of German colonies in the South Pacific region, including German New Guinea, and the consolidation of Allied occupation in these regions. Ashton thence served in the Torrens from 17 February 1918-19 January 1920. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal on 1 January 1944 and served at the Naval Reserve Depot, Port Adelaide from 7 August 1935-14 January 1947, being discharged on 24 April 1947; sold together with his original rather worn Certificate of Service and Stoker Ratings Qualification sheet.
