Joseph Samuel Pitt was born at Portsea on 26 September 1892 and was a garden boy prior to joining the Royal Navy on 20 July 1909 as a Boy 2nd Class. On Woolwich at the outbreak of the Great War he served on Jackal and later Onslow between 7 May 1916-30 September 1917. Joining Ursa on 1 October 1917, he remained on her until 30 June 1918. Shore pensioned on 21 November 1932, Pitt re-enlisted on 31 July 1939 and was released to the Reserve on 17 August 1945.
