William Henry Mitchell was born at Clint Saint George, Devon on 2 May 1885 and was a lamp boy on the Great Western Railways upon his joining the Royal Navy in March 1901. During the Great War he served aboard Blenheim amongst others. Having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1919, he was pensioned ashore in June 1922.
