Richard Patrick Cumming was born on 26 October 1875 at Devonport, Devon and joined the Royal Navy on 29 September 1897. He was serving on Pegasus at the start of the Great War and then joined Goliath, with whom he served from 14 November 1914-22 February 1915, then to Vivid between 23 February-5 May 1915 whereupon he was invalided due to Chronic Hepatitis and Neuroartherica.
