William Alfred Saxby was born on 14 October 1890 at Plymouth. He enlisted on 14 October 1908 and served on Devonshire at the start of the Great War, moving to Vivid from 31 October 1915-30 August 1916, followed by service on Sandhurst from 31 August-22 September 1916. He was with Colombo (Cardiff) at the start of the Second World War, transferring to Raleigh on 21 February 1940. He was finally put ashore on 18 November 1944.
