Alexander Morrison Barrie was born in the Manchester Lanes on 29 May 1891 and was a druggist traveller by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy on 6 August 1912. During the Great War he served aboard the Hospital Ship Somali from 28 August 1915-31 March 1916, which would have seen him heavily engaged off Gallipoli tending ANZAC casualties in that period. Barrie thence served aboard the Hospital Ship Karapara from 1 April 1916-5 May 1918. He was invalided in June 1918.
