Medieval Period (c. 1400-1500), Gold Poesy Ring, Sans de Partir ('Without leaving'), flattened band engraved with flowers separating the inscription written in blackletter script, inside plain, 2.97g, ring size approx. P (cf. BM 1960,1103.1; cf. V&A ref. AF.1081), extremely fine condition, inscription all still visible, a choice example of a posy ring from this period

Found on cultivated land in Snape with Thorp (North Yorkshire), 24 August 2007

This ring is recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, with the following report: "This was a popular sentiment used on expensive medieval love tokens. The finger-ring is gold, and dates from the fifteenth century."




A posy ring on display at the Harborough Museum also has the Old French inscription: 'sans departir' which is thought to be an abbreviated version of the saying 'mon Coeur avez sans departir' (you have my heart without parting).
