Karl Neufeld (1856-1918)
1898 Letter with cover partly laid down on a card, written by the wife of Karl Neufeld from Isolation Hospital, Northwich to a lady in Manchester. "I thank God for my husband's rescue. I would go to meet him on his return. I am a poor woman and cannot see how it is to be managed." Neufeld was taken prisoner by the Khalifa in 1887, held in chains and subject of enormous media interest. He was freed in September 1898 after the fall of Khartoum and published an account of his imprisonment. Together with a press cutting announcing his release, mentioning his wife, and five postcards, two depicting him (7)
