General Sir Archibald Hunter (1856-1933)
1897 Autograph letter from Berber to General Knowles, OC British Forces in Egypt, marked "Private" referring to the current state of Sudan, writing in his capacity as Governor of Omdurman. He mentions Osman Digna, eventually captured by the British in 1900; and Mahmoud Wad Ahmad, nephew of the Khalifa "Our gunboats have bombarded him twice but he laughs at them". An important letter mentioning the railways, trade, local conditions and underfunding from the government. Together with a UK letter plus cover dated 1901 where Hunter acknowledges a donation for the National Lifeboat Fund, two cut signatures, one dated May 1900; and two stock certificates in the names of Hunter and his wife (8)
