Provenance

The Wilhelm Hüffer (1821-1895) Collection of European Coins and Medals

with his envelope

The birth of Prince Leopold in 1716 had long been awaited by his parents Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. After seven years of marriage, the arrival of an heir to the House of Habsburg was met with great fanfare and national celebration. Numerous medals were struck, while the Austrian composer Johann Joseph Fux was charged with composing an opera to mark the event. Despite this, Prince Leopold was to be the last-born male heir to the House of Habsburg and sadly died aged only seven months in November 1716.
