James Horsby was born at Kyle, Saskatchewan on 24 December 1893 and was a farmer by trade upon his enlisting into the 188th (Saskatchewan) Battalion at Prince Albert on 18 March 1916.

Transferred to the 28th Battalion on 3 January 1917, he served on the Western Front from 13 January 1917. During the course of his career, he suffered from influenza, November 1916, pyrexia of unknown origin, 5 May 1917, trench fever, 18 May 1917 and a bayonet wound to the left hand at Arras on 5 May 1918. Hornsby added the M.M. to his laurels by the end of the Great War.
