(x) A Vimy Ridge 1917 M.M. awarded to Private J. J. Anderson, 50th Battalion (Calgary), Canadian Expeditionary Force, who was also wounded in action

Military Medal, G.V.R. (811067 Pte. J. J. Anderson. 50/Can: Inf:), good very fine

M.M. London Gazette 28 July 1917. The original Recommendation - approved by General Currie on 23 June 1917 - states:

'In front of Vimy Ridge on the night of 10/11th May 1917. During the heavy bombardment previous to the first counter-attack, when the rest of his Lewis Gun Team had been killed and the enemy attack was launched, alone he fought his gun with great bravery and coolness, thereby preventing them entering our position at this point.'

James Johnston Anderson was born at Manitou, Manitoba on 4 February 1882 and was a gentleman upon his enlistment at Edmonton on 6 December 1915. He arrived in England aboard the Olympic on 30 August 1916 and landed in France on 15 November 1916. Anderson shared in the actions of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and would surely have crossed paths with Private John George Pattison, a Battalion comrade who won the Victoria Cross for his actions around Hill 145 on 10 April 1917.

Having won his M.M. a month later, he was wounded in action by shrapnel to the left thigh at Cambrai on 1 September 1918. He died on 12 November 1940; sold together with copied research.
