Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (2814 Sergt Michael. Ryan. 58th Foot), small reverse lettering, good very fine

Micheal Ryan was born at Cappawhite, County Tipperary in 1882 and worked there as a Farm Servant. Attesting at St. Helier, Jersey on 23 July 1852 with the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot. Posted to New Zealand Ryan was to serve there for two years and two months, given when the 58th Regiment served there- 1849-56- it is likely that he was still a Private at the time. Promoted Corporal on 1 October 1857 and Sergeant on 7 November 1858 Ryan also saw five years and one month of service in India.

His final promotion was to Colour Sergeant on 3 July 1861 re-engaging at Curragh Camp, Ireland on 23 July 1862 Ryan was revered to Sergeant on 5 October 1867. Reinstated on 1 December of that year it was not to last and he again reverted to Sergeant on 18 August 1868. He was discharged with this rank on 28 July 1873 having served at total of 21 years and 21 days; sold together with copied service and discharge papers as well as a typed career summary and summary of the history and postings of the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment.
