Percy Kendall was born at South Hackney, London on 21 February 1888 and entered the Royal Navy from the Training Ship Boscowen on 21 February 1906. During the Great War he joined Garry, the Yarrow-type River-class destroyer on 3 November 1914. That was in good time for her action on 23 November 1914, when the U-18 was attempting to enter Scapa Flow. It was spotted in Pentland Firth and was rammed by the naval trawler Dorothy Grey. In an attempt to escape U-18 dived, struck bottom forcing her back to the surface. Garry then closed in and rammed U-18 which sank at position with the 1 loss and 22 survivors going 'into the bag'. Departing her on 31 December 1915, Kendall then served aboard Victor from 31 May-15 June 1916 and Royal Oak from 27 August 1917-25 March 1919, at which point he was demobilised. Kendall re-joined on 19 September 1921 and was pensioned ashore on 16 April 1930. He returned to the fold upon the outbreak of the Second World War but was retained ashore medically unfit on 20 November 1939.
