Edwin George Montgomery was born on 7 February 1883 at Woolwich and was a fitter and turner upon his joining the Royal Navy on 5 August 1904. He served aboard the submarine depot ship Maidstone from 15 October 1911-12 March 1918. Maidstone led the 8th Submarine Flotilla to its war station at Harwich in the 1914. She remained the principal depot ship for the offensive submarine force at Harwich for the duration of the Great War. Montgomery, who was issued his L.S. & G.C. Medal on 15 September 1919, was discharged on 2 August 1926.
