Herbert Stanley Smith was born at Walworth on 29 April 1875 and joined the Royal Navy from the Training Ship Mount Edgecombe on 29 April 1893. He served aboard Minotaur from 25 May 1912-1 April 1919, when he was demobilised. She was in Wei Hai Wei on 3 July 1914 when most of the ships assigned to the China Station were ordered to assemble at Hong Kong. After the outbreak of the Great War, the ship, Hampshire and Newcastle sailed for the German-owned island of Yap. They captured the collier Elsbeth on 11 August and destroyed the radio station there with gunfire. She later shared in the Battle of Jutland but did not fire her guns on that famous day.
