Robert Thompson Hall was born at Wrotham, Kent on 28 May 1873 and enlisted with the Royal Navy as Engine Room Artificer Class IV on 31 January 1895 at Victory II. He saw service with a number of vessels prior to the Great War including Majestic, Hecla and Leander he was later posted to the shore establishment Blake where he was awarded his L.S. & G.C..

Posted to the battlecruiser Queen Mary on 4 September 1913 with the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer Class I, he must have been surpised to find himself sharing the name of her first commander, Captain Reginald Hall. Still with her at the outbreak of the Great War Hall was to serve at the battlecruisers first action, the Battle of Heligoland Bight.

The battlecruiser force were intended as support during the Battle but when the cruisers struggled to disengage Beatty commited them. Queen Mary was the second in the line after the flagship Lion and joined her in sinking the German light cruisers whose actions had slowed the withdrawal Tyrwhitt's striking force.

Hall left Queen Mary on 12 May 1915 and was posted to H.M.S. Cachalot- a Z-class anti-submarine whaler- where he was to serve until 14 November 1917. Posted ashore Hall was demobilised from Fisguard on 28 August 1919.
