The Victory Medal awarded to Leading Stoker R. H. Shaw, Royal Navy who was aboard the Hogue during the Action of 22 September 1914 and later saw service with H.M.S. Shannon at the Battle of Jutland

Victory Medal 1914-19 (172121 R. H. Shaw. L. Sto. R.N.), edge bruising, sometime cleaned, very fine

Richard Henry Shaw was born at Liverpool on 1 April 1874, and enlisted in the navy as Stoker class II on 1 February 1893. Serving mainly ashore in the period prior to the Great War Shaw joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 27 August 1904.

With the outbreak of the Great War Shaw was mobilised on 2 August 1914 and posted to H.M.S. Hogue a Cressy-class armoured cruiser. Hogue was one of three Cressy-class vessels to be sunk during the disastrous Action of the 22nd September. The squadron- much reduced due to bad weather- was caught in the open by U-9 with Aboukir being hit first. Hogue was the second targeted, she was also the only one to see the enemy, opening fire briefly before the U-boat's torpedoes struck her but failing to hit the target. After Hogue went down Cressy was also hit, overloaded with crew rescued from the first two ships casualties were high.

Shaw survived the sinking of Hogue and, after a period of service ashore, he was posted to H.M.S. Shannon serving with her for the rest of the war. Shannon spent much of the war hunting for German Commerce raiders in the North Sea and was also present at the Battle of Jutland. Shaw was promoted Leading Stoker on 15 April 1917 and served in that role until 6 March 1919 when he was demobilised; sold together with a copied service record.
