The Victory Medal awarded to Leading Seaman. J. E. Knights D.S.M. Royal Navy, late Royal Canadian Navy

Victory Medal 1914-19 (213829 J. E. Knights L.S. R.N.), very fine

[D.S.M.] London Gazette 27 June 1917

James Edward Knights was born at Norwich, Norfolk on 13 March 1884 and enlisted with the rank of Boy class II on 11 March 1901. He served aboard a number of vessels, being promoted Able Seaman aboard Redbreast on 21 August 1902 as well as such vessels as Majestic and Illustrious.

When the Niobe was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy Knights went with her joining that- at the time fledgling- service with the rank of Leading Seaman. Leaving the Canadian Navy on 10 October 1913 he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 13 March 1914. Mobilised later that year for service in the Great War on 2 August 1914 Knights was returned to the rank of Leading Seaman with the King Alfred. Transferred ashore on 15 October 1914 he remained there until 4 July 1915 when he was posted to Attentive III and attached to H.M.S. Lorna the lead ship of the Auxiliary Patrol. It was with this vessel that he won the D.S.M., likely for anti-submarine activities in early 1917, which was the main focus of the Auxiliary Patrols. Posted back ashore on 27 June 1917 Knights was demobilised on 8 February 1919; sold together with a copied service record.
